Keep Bugs Away With A Non-Toxic Mason Jar Repellent

As much as we love summer, the pesky mosquitoes and other creatures that come with it simply cannot be neglected. Not only do mosquitoes cause troubles when we try to enjoy outdoors, but the recent Zika virus epidemic is yet another reason to ward off these pests.

Even though the store-bought sprays are effective at keeping these pests at bay, many of them contain DEET, a chemical which has been found to cause various health issues, such as skin irritation, allergic reactions, and even nervous system interference.

Natural Bug Repellents

The good news is that there are natural foods and compounds which can also repel insects, without the risk of exposing yourself to harmful chemicals.

Lemon eucalyptus essential oil has been proven to repel mosquitoes through numerous studies. Moreover, citronella essential oil, which is drawn out from lemongrass, also wards off mosquitoes due to its strong scent.

According to a study, substances obtained from the peel of citrus fruits like limes, tangerines, grapefruits, oranges, and lemons also repel mosquitoes and other insects. In other words, the strong smell of citrus fruits is extremely effective at keeping mosquitoes away without causing side effects.

Mosquito Repellent Mason Jars

The use of mason jars is one of the most effective ways of using essential oils and citrus fruits to repel mosquitoes. Here is how to make you own mosquito repellent mason jar:

  • 2 mason jars
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1 lime, sliced
  • 4 sprigs of rosemary (optional)
  • 10 drops of lemon eucalyptus essential oil
  • 10 drops of citronella essential oil

  • Add even amount of lemon and lime slices into the jars
  • Add 2 sprigs of rosemary into each jar
  • Pour water into the jars (3/4)
  • Finally, add the essentials oils without mixing them together
  • Add more water, if needed

These jars are great for places like campfires, backyards, porches, and other places where mosquitoes thrive.  Lighting a candle is all you have to do to activate these mosquito repellents. As simple as that!

5 Tips to Get Rid of Mosquitoes and Avoid Getting Bit

  • Avoid the peak mosquito feeding times ( dawn and dusk)
  • Wear light clothing (“Mosquitoes have problems flying in even a slight wind, and so they keep close to the ground.”)
  • Reduce the number of mosquitoes by removing or treating standing water ( Elimination of mosquito breeding sites is the key to reducing their number)
  • Provide habitat for natural mosquito predators, such as frogs, fish, turtles, and birds
  • Use herbs to keep them at bay, such as anise, mint, eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender, cloves, cedar, etc
